We’re back at it again, wrapping up the our favorite recent Thai music videos, including everything from moody underground rap and R&B, to poppy vogue and baile funk. Audiences can be pretty split between the two camps, so we tried to group them together with the angsty, brooding cuts in the first few selections and the brighter, more bubbly stuff towards the end. But we highly recommend you peeping them all.
The underground scene is really cultivating a distinct sound for itself while also keeping things progressive and experimental. But the pop stuff can be super creative, exploring genres that the underground has overlooked and tapping into traditional Thai styles of music as well. Either way, you’re bound to enjoy some at least of it.
First up is a new visual for the loverboy dnb tune “Back For Me” by maximus! If you’ve been paying close attention, the audio has been around for a hot minute; but regardless of whether it’s new or familiar to you, it’s guaranteed to pull some heartstrings with its mournful melodies and insightful lyrics about relationships.
Don’t sleep on S4EED bro.
“Sexski is next up,” was word around the office when we were bumping this.
Trigger warning: this has a pretty brutal hook about suicide and death. Baebibetti is up in her feels and uses the studio to try and shed them with an assist by Tarvethz (who continues popping up in features all over the scene). It’s good that artists have a way to express such painful thoughts, and hopefully listeners who feel similarly find this music therapeutic but not encouraging.
Feeling cute, might delete later. Nothing wrong with feeling yourself, that’s self care. GRXM definitely on one here along with RRMARNI. This is a good tune to hype yourself up to.
Always check for Dha Vision’s Gonnafly and 7fifty, they consistently bring the flames.
Of course we gotta slide some drainage into the feed here. Thaiboy is for the children. (That’s a Wu reference for the literal children out there lol.)
Some smooth R&B Jersey vibes to get up close and personal to via Chanan, 4Bang, and RUBISDABEAT. If this drops at the club, we’re definitely catching a dance.
Rage rap is a regular subgenre in the underground scene here, but rarely does it ever go as hard as this. Mosh the fuck outta the pit with this one (no punching please). BlackArmatus and $piritmad, who handle vocal duties here, coproduced the track alongside plucksunset. BlackArmatus had a cool party at Irie Bangkok this weekend.
If you’re vegetarian you might wanna skip this one lol. XG makes good on his promises of gore with this latest video for his recent horrorcore album, Sacred Rituals. Directed by the goth gawd himself, 666KT.
The song “I Know” by Lil X (produced by bhoomkij) is a vibe, but what’s really hype about this is that they produced a post-apocalyptic Bangkok anime for it!
Pretty crazy that major labels are producing music that blends vogue and baile funk into pop music these days. For that, you have Aof Pongsak, Pangina Heals, and Tong Apollo to thank. Also, there doesn’t seem to be many out and proud vocalists in the underground scene, so it’s great that we’re able to include at least one in this list. Big up!
Never forget 3cha. That seems to be Joey Boy’s motto and we love him for it. This track is aroi and leans into the comedy music traditions of Thailand to great effect. It features a guest appearance by Korea’s DJ.Soda and is produced by Spydamonkee and Mashdawg. (Speaking of Mashdawg, definitely peep his Chachachavis Scott edit, you won’t regret it. Also, since we take any chance we get to talk about this stuff, check out this 3cha flip of New Jeans “Ditto” by CCK Remix).
We just mentioned K-pop, but there are some T-pop girl groups doing the thing too. The extremely catchy “Situationship” by 4EVE is a perfect example. (Who’s got the remix??)
And last but not least, we’ll just slide in this rap blended with the more traditional type of 3cha by singnoy and sawayz because we dig it.
And that’s the wrap, folks. Tune in next time!
