If there’s an alternate universe out there, it’s definitely a pink one. At least that’s the way Pongpon Preechanon imagines it. The idea of parallel dimensions is everywhere these days. It’s an endless series of reimaginings, just like a real multiverse would be. The fact that there’s no way to know for sure what any of this would actually look like is exactly what fascinates Preechanon. He can create anything he wants.

Preechanon’s parallel reality, which was shown at 333Gallery last month, is one full of beautiful women and blob creatures, all colored in pastels and pinks, fashioned in retro-futuristic gear that looks like it was created by a neural network but was clearly painted by human hands in fine detail and with deep care.

The creatures, which are fluffy poof balls and poop-emoji shaped, give Preechanon’s collection a light air, but the girls are the clear focus. They’re slim and light-skinned, styled like they’re from the 60s but using materials that don’t quite exist yet. It’s a mix of astronaut and socialite, flighty girls on their way out for cocktails on a hover ship or to go and brawl in a neon roller rink. Even many of the frames, which are made of bulky, smooth plastic with rounded edges, look like something that could be from both the past and the future simultaneously.

Often, it’s the world these characters inhabit that is most surreal. In one scene, a confused girl looks out onto endless dunes of gelatin cubes. In another, a woman floats on a sea outpost surrounded by bobbing cat buoys. There are clones, weightless bubbles, virtual reality booths, and industrial factories.

The strangeness of everything creates a slight sense of unease. We’re entering a world where a smile could be a death threat in their language. The rules are clearly very different here. But the charm and beauty of the characters draw us in, and the pastel colors send positive signals. Preechanon encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and explore this new world, the mystery is why it’s fun.
